Step by Step: French Press

What You’ll Need:

  • Coffee Beans
  • French Press
  • Grinder (Burr Recommended)
  • Kettle
  • Scale
  • Timer

Getting Started

Before we start brewing we need to figure out what your perfect ratio of coffee to water is. Everyone’s coffee preferences are different depending on if you like it stronger or weaker. Luckily with the calculator below you can easily figure out what is best for you (Remember there are 8 fl oz in one cup)

Step 1:

Once you have figured out your perfect coffee to water ratio, we can start preparing the french press. Pour in a small amount of hot water boiled at 205°F. Now rinse out the water after letting it sit in there for 30 seconds or so.

Step 2:

Measure out your coffee beans using the calculator above from before.

Step 3:

Grind your coffee beans, either using a manual or electric grinder. Preferably this will be using a burr grinder for a more consistent grind. If you’re using our camp grade manual grinder setting it to 34-42 from the start point will give you a coarse grind, which is what we are using. For a medium coarse grind, look to use 28-34 depending on which you prefer.

Step 4:

Now that we have everything set up, pour your ground coffee beans into your french press and add in your 205°F measured water with the help of the calculator above. Cover the top of the lid to allow for the steeping to occur to bring out all of the amazing flavours.

Step 5:

After 1 minute, stir your coffee (preferably with chopsticks or a wooden spoon) and reapply the lid, setting your timer to 3 minutes.

Step 6:

Once the timer goes off, slowly plunge your french press. A consistent plunging speed is necessary to make sure that you get all of the flavour out.

Step 7:

Pour out your coffee into your favorite cup and enjoy!
